katamorphism

Destructive metamorphism in the katamorphic zone, at or near the Earth's surface, in which complex minerals are broken down and altered through oxidation, hydration, solution, and allied processes to produce simpler and less dense minerals. The term was introduced by Van Hise in 1904. Also spelled catamorphism. Compare: anamorphism
