Bass

Former railroad station in Grand Canyon National Park named after William Wallace Bass. Bass was the most noteworthy of the early pioneers that came to the rim of Grand Canyon in the 1880s to carve a life and a lifestyle from the wilderness. The contribution of Bass to the canyon history is difficult to measure. Among the most notable is the construction of more than 50 miles of inner canyon trail, most of which can still be walked today. With Captain Burro, a Havasupai, he discovered Mystic Spring. Bass built a trail to the spring and rewarded the Captain with flour and half a beef for his efforts. Bass had camps on the South Rim, mines, and camps on the north side at Shinumo Creek. A cable car crossed the river. Mr. Bass helped the Havasupai establish a school. The Santa Fe Railroad purchased his tourist business in 1923.
