A point at which IMS records its internal status--control information, plus a unique checkpoint ID--and writes the checkpoint table to the restart data set (RDS). This information allows IMS to reconstruct its condition if recovery is later necessary. System checkpointing is done automatically each time a user-selected number of records is written to the log.
