A professional who raises soft-shell crabs for food markets by catching crabs from sea and retaining them in tanks until they molt. Respnsibilities include:

  • Catches crabs, using lines or pots.
  • Sorts crabs according to stages of shell development and dumps them into open tanks containing sea water.
  • Starts pumps to aerate water and maintain constant flow of sea water through tanks.
  • Observes crabs to ascertain when they begin to shed their brittle outer shell.
  • Holds shell being shed, when necessary, to assist emerging crab that gets hung in shell during molting.
  • Gathers freshly emerged soft-shell crabs and places them in containers for shipment to market.
