Impression, soleil levant
"Impression, soleil levant", or "Impression, Sunrise" in English is the name of an art work created by Claude Monet as one of pioneers of the art genre called "impressionism". Unlike conventional art works which usually featured religious themes or portraits and looked realistic, impressionist art depicted ordinary objects with emphasis on accurate expression of the changing of light. "Impression, soleil levant" was first on exhibition in France in 1874 in an independent art show of a group of unconventional artists (who were later named "impressionists"). The work did not have a name until Monet was asked to name its category in an interview. He said "Put impression" and the name stuck.
