The motion of the basal ice of the glacier relative to the material immediately beneath the glacier.

The most common method of training an artificial neural network. A training set, consisting of examples of input data for which the output is known, is presented to the network, and the network weights are adjusted until the network produces results that are in agreement with the training set. This type of network is often used in prediction and in classification.
Industry:Weather
The most downstream point of a drainage basin past which all flow from an upstream watershed flows. See watershed.
Industry:Weather
The manner in which a basin's characteristics affect the method of handling the water deposited by precipitation events.

The momentum transfer at the lower boundary of the ocean to the solid earth by friction at the ocean bottom. For the friction velocity, a value of 1/30 of the geostrophic velocity at the upper boundary of the bottom boundary layer is assumed, and the drag coefficient is approximately 10−5.

The hydrodynamic instability arising from certain distributions of vorticity in a two-dimensional nondivergent flow. This is an inertial instability in that kinetic energy is the only form of energy transferred between current and perturbation. The variation of vorticity in the basic current may be concentrated in discontinuities of the horizontal wind shear (to be distinguished from Helmholtz instability, where the velocity itself is discontinuous) or may be continuously distributed in a curved velocity profile. A well-known necessary condition for barotropic instability is that the basic state vorticity gradient must have both signs in the domain (i.e., counterpropagating Rossby waves must be possible).
Industry:Weather
The liquid remaining after seawater has been concentrated by evaporation until salt has crystallized. Compare brine.
Industry:Weather
The horizontal direction from one terrestrial point to another; basically synonymous with azimuth. Bearing, however, may be expressed in several ways: true bearing and magnetic bearing are the angular directions in degrees measured clockwise from true north and magnetic north, respectively; compass bearing is expressed in terms of compass points; and relative bearing is the angular distance measured clockwise from the heading of a craft (in aviation, relative bearing is often referred to a clock face, that is, “3 o'clock” equals a relative bearing of 90°, etc. ).
Industry:Weather
The general flow equation for two-dimensional unconfined aquifer flow.
